“The Self-Exam Filter” is a project created by Wunderman Thompson Brasil for Johnson&Johnson that was transformed into a videocase. The idea came from trying to solve a problem that was aggravated in the early pandemic: the decrease in available medical consultations for fear of contracting the virus in clinics and hospitals. This led to a significant increase in other illnesses that could have been avoided with routine exams, such as breast cancer.

The project consists of an Instagram filter made to direct women to self-examining at home, with their own smartphone, where graphic signs indicate which body movements should be done. BLOCO was invited to produce the soundtrack, which garnered international and domestic attention. Outside of Brazil, the project was shortlisted for Cannes Lions 2021 in the “Social & Influencer” category. Here in Brazil, it received three prizes: at the 46th annual Clube de Criação, the project was awarded silver in the DIgital/Interface & Navigation category, and bronze in the Digital / Innovative use of technology category. At MMA Smarties 2021 the project was awarded silver in the “Social Impact / Nonprofit / NGO” category.

The film’s introduction, ironically, shows the superficial aspect of the face-distorting filters, which aim to approximate users’ faces to unattainable aesthetic models. Similarly, the score begins with an innocent and superficial beat, produced to sound as if coming from a radio player. After a few seconds, a sudden shift reveals the film’s real purpose, with the music reinforcing the theme’s appropriate seriousness. From that point on, the music enters into a passage with a more intense but polished beat, which lays the groundwork for a rhytmhic and accelerated synthesizer line, over a sonic bed that holds the music up as a background.
