Estúdio Campana

Pharus Design

Estúdio Campana, formed in 1984 by brothers Humberto and Fernando, is one of the leading names in contemporary Brazilian design. The duo’s strong signature carries a particular way of looking at and reworking Brazilian culture, always with an unexpected approach to everyday elements. The brothers have garnered recognition both domestically and abroad, and are some of the few Brazilians with pieces in the MoMA archives in New York.

With the aim of preserving an ever-growing collection of creations, in 2009 the duo founded Instituto Campana, a gesture that leaves as its legacy the establishment of design as a transformative tool through social and educational programs.

In 2021 the studio went through a reformulation of its visual identity through Pharus Design, and Bloco was invited to produce the soundtrack accompanying the product’s launch video. The first question we asked ourselves was how we might associate, in a one minute piece, the materiality of the everyday objects with the sounds made by hand in a Brazilian-sounding language. From there, we began selecting a sonic palette, including woody percussion, metallic surfaces, glass jars, fingers snapping, handclaps, drums and woodwind instruments. The composition itself follows its path inside one of the many facets of popular nordestino music, a region that is a virtually inexhaustible source of inspiration for the Campana brothers’ design, and where Instituto Campana mainly acts.
