Biossance Dark Spot
Antonia Petta
Founded in 2016 in the laboratories of a biotechnology company in the city of Berkeley, California, Biossance is a pioneer in the Clean Beauty movement, which advocates for a clean and sustainable beauty industry, with skincare products free from toxins and animal cruelty. In the search for a cure for malaria, the scientists behind the brand managed to develop Squalane — a substance that maintains skin elasticity, radiance, and hydration. Previously extracted from shark liver, Squalane is now produced through the fermentation of sugarcane, making Biossance’s raw material environmentally responsible, highly effective, and safe. Present in Brazil since early 2018, the brand reached out to Bloco to develop the soundtrack for the campaign of the new Vitamin C + Squalane Dark Spot Correcting Serum.
The film makes it clear that beauty exists in the stories and truths that the skin tells. Spots record the passage of time, mark challenging periods, carry memories, and skin signs point to the transformations we go through throughout life. Likewise, the soundtrack was created with the intention of revealing an unpretentious and light tone, sounding as human as possible. We recorded semi-acoustic double bass and synthesizers with no post-recording processing — in other words, we chose to embrace chance without correcting notes that might occasionally fall outside the rigid metric of the time signature. For the rhythmic section, we used cuts of acoustic drum recordings, captured and sequenced with the same intention, almost as if they were taken from a home rehearsal. The same approach was applied to the vocal cuts, which serve both rhythmic and melodic functions and, at times, are almost out of tune. After all, we were seeking the truth of real life.
