Biossance Dark Spot

Antonia Petta

Born in 2016 in the laboratories of a biotechnology company in Berkeley, California, Biossance is a pioneer in the Clean Beauty movement, standing for a cleaner and more sustainable cosmetics industry, with cruelty-free, toxin-free skin care products. Searching for the cure for malaria, the scientists behind the brand were able to develop Esqualano – a substance that maintains the skin’s elasticity, shine and hydration. Previously sourced from shark livers, Esqualano is now made from fermented sugar-cane, making Biossance’s materials ecology correct, highly effective and safe. In Brazil since 2018, the company contacted Bloco in order to develop a soundtrack for the new Sérum Uniformizador with Vitamin C and Esqualano for their Dark Spot line campaign.

The film makes the beauty in the stories that skin tells very clear. Spots register the passage of time, mark challenging periods, carry memories… signs on the skin punctuate the transformations we go through at each stage in life. In the same way, the score was created with the intention of revealing an unpretentious, light tone, sounding the most human possible. We recorded a semi-hollow-body electric bass and synthesizers with no post-production, we decided to embrace chance without correcting any notes which might end up out of the rigid metrics of the piece. For the rhythmic part, we used samples of drums recorded and sequenced with the same objective, almost as if they were taken from a home recording. The same logic was used for the vocal samples, which have a rhythmic as well as melodic function, and almost strays out of tune at times. In the end, we looked for the truth of real life.
